Elektrik enerjisiyle su, hidrojen (H2) ve oksijen (O2) moleküllerine ayrışır. Katotta hidrojen açığa çıkarken; anotta oksijen açığa çıkar. Açığa çıkan hidrojen, oksijenin iki katıdır. Suyun iletkenliğini artırmak için NaOH alkalin solüsyonu kullanılır. Anot ve katot arasındaki diyafram, açığa çıkan gazların birbirine karışmasını engeller.
